About Lake
Tahoe
Lake
Tahoe's elevation is about 6,225 feet above sea level, making it
one of the highest alpine lakes (over 6000 ft) in the world
and the largest in the United States. At it's widest and longest
points, Lake Tahoe is 22 miles long, 12 miles wide and is approximately
72 miles around. Lake Tahoe's deepest known point is 1,645 feet,
which makes it the third deepest lake in North America and the tenth
deepest in the world. Interestingly enough, the bottom of the lake
has a lower elevation than Carson City, NV! Lake
Tahoe is known to be a vary cold lake with temperatures ranging
from 41° to 68°. At 600 feet below the surface the temperature
stays a constant 39 degrees Fahrenheit. In the shallower beaches
and coves, the water can be much warmer, especially in the warmer
summer months.
Lake
Tahoe is also known for its fantastic climate! In summer daytime
highs rarely exceed 80 degrees, and you can expect sun about 93%
of the time for the entire summer season. During winter, while
other parts of the country are known for their overcast forecast,
Lake Tahoe enjoys sunny days and bright blue sky, which makes
for great Lake Tahoe Activities!
According to the South
Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce,
"In
over 50 years of recorded history of the weather in the Basin,
80 percent of the days have had sunshine. The probability runs
from a December/January/February low of 75% sunshine to a June/July/August
high of over 93%. Any given year will provide approximately
240 cloudless days and another 75 days when both sunshine and
clouds are recorded. The remaining 50 days are the ones that
provide the famous Sierra snowpack...and a wee bit of rain."
Lake
Tahoe is known as the one the greatest American year round playgrounds.
